FAQs About Psychological Services in Carlton

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist in Victoria?

You do not need a referral or mental health care plan, or be experiencing acute psychological symptoms to access therapy. Many of our clients seek therapy to process life challenges, relationship difficulties, mood changes, anxiety, depression, a traumatic event or identify unhelpful patterns that are impacting them in negative ways. All are very valid reasons for adults, couples and young people to seek therapy.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a therapist in Australia?

A therapist is a broad term that can be applied to several types of mental health professionals, including psychologists. A psychologist is a more specific type of mental health professional. A registered psychologist studies human behaviour. Following up to 6 years of study, psychologists are registered to practise with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). They must continue ongoing training and supervision to keep their registration active.

A counselling and clinical psychologist is trained in Mental Health experiences and the impact of these experiences on thoughts, feelings and behaviour. They are skilled in multiple therapies (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Schema Therapy, Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy) that are transdiagnostic.

How do I find the right psychologist in Carlton, Melbourne?

Your friendly team will ask you a few questions to match you with the Counselling or Clinical Psychologist whose background and experience may best fit your needs.

You can also look through our Psychologists and let us know who resonates with you via the bios on our website.

How long is each session & how many will I need?

Therapy sessions last approximately 50 minutes. How many sessions you’ll need depends on your goals. This can be discussed in the initial session. Some individuals will come for a few sessions focused around one issue they would like to problem solve.

Others will have seen psychologists before and are looking for a different approach or support to manage the resurfacing problems in the context of life changes. Other individuals will be engaging in therapy for the first time and would like to understand their experience and obtain the skills to move forward.

What will therapy be like?

The first one to two sessions are based on assessment. Your psychologist will have some questions to get a good understanding of your difficulties, life experiences and goals for therapy. This is also an opportunity to assess whether your psychologist is a good fit for you. Following the assessment, you and your psychologist will collaborate on how to move forward with treatment.

Treatment may be a combination of skills to manage emotions, mood, and negative thoughts, processing memories or past events, challenging and reorienting beliefs that keep us stuck, and behaviour modification aligned to our goals.
