You can also look through our Psychologists and let us know who you connect with most via the bios on our website. We will organise your first session, run you through all the necessary info, and send you an email with your appointment time, location and Psychologist’s details to take any guesswork out.

Initial Sessions

During the first one to two sessions, your Psychologist will take you through some questions about your experience and history. They will understand your goals to develop a personalised treatment plan for you. It is also a good opportunity for you to ask questions about your psychologist’s style of therapy.

Feedback and Adaptation

Along the way, your Psychologist will check in with you about how the psychological treatment is tracking and if you need more/less emphasis on a particular area. We love feedback because you are the expert in what you need. We want to hear from you to best support you.

Where do I start?

The research stage of psychological treatment can feel overwhelming and leave you feeling indecisive. We can help you with that. New clients can call or complete our contact form to get the ball rolling. You can send us your referral (if you have one) or tell us what you are seeking support with (and if you don’t know that’s fine! This is a good goal for therapy too).

Our Client Support team can discuss all the options and explain what you need to know. Our Support Team have lived experiences with Mental Health and seeking support, so they can relate to your questions or concerns and are compassionate and friendly humans.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist in Victoria?

You do not need a referral or be experiencing acute psychological symptoms to access therapy. Many of our clients seek therapy to increase their self-awareness, have a space to talk through and process life challenges, identify patterns that are keeping them stuck and impacting them in negative ways, or for support with moving towards the type of relationships and careers we value.

Some do not know and want to use the space to process and work it out. All are very valid reasons to seek counselling.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a therapist in Australia?

Psychologists study human behaviour. Following up to 6 years of study, psychologists are registered to practise with AHPRA. They must continue ongoing training and supervision to keep their registration active.

Psychologists are trained in Mental Health experiences and the impact of these experiences on thoughts, feelings and behaviour. They are skilled in multiple therapies (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy) that are transdiagnostic. These effective therapies can be applied across multiple diagnoses or mental health issues.

How do I find the right psychologist in Melbourne?

Our friendly team will ask you a few questions to match you with the Psychologist whose background and experience may best fit your needs. You can also look through our Psychologists and let us know who resonates with you via the bios on our website.

How long is each session & how many sessions will I need?

Sessions last approximately 50 minutes. The number of sessions depends on your goals. This can be discussed in the initial session. Some individuals will come for a few sessions focused around one issue they would like to problem solve.

Others will have seen psychologists before and are looking for a different approach or support to manage resurfacing issues in the context of life changes. Other individuals will be engaging with a psychologist for the first time and would like to understand their experience and how to move forward.

What will therapy be like?

The first one to two sessions are based on assessment. Your psychologist will have some questions to get a good understanding of your difficulties, life experiences and goals for therapy. This is also a good opportunity to assess whether your psychologist is a good fit for you. Following the assessment, you and your psychologist will collaborate on how to move forward with treatment.

Treatment may be a combination of; skills to manage emotions, mood, and negative thoughts, processing memories or past events, challenging and reorienting beliefs that keep us stuck, and behaviour modification aligned to our goals. Our Melbourne Psychologists are here to support your journey every step of the way.
